Um, and I got my journalism degree and Um, and I got my journalism degree and Um, and I got my journalism degree and at the very end of the four years at the very end of the four years at the very end of the four years realized that like number one, I'm not realized that like number one, I'm not realized that like number one, I'm not going to make any money. Um and I was working broadcast side. Um and I was working broadcast side. Um and I was working with kids. I was actually um a Young with kids. I was actually um a Young with kids. I was actually um a Young Life leader in college and I really Life leader in college and I really Life leader in college and I really enjoyed that. And so I just thought, enjoyed that. And so I just thought, enjoyed that. And so I just thought, well, I'll just tack my teaching well, I'll just tack my teaching well, I'll just tack my teaching certificate on the end of my degree. And I taught high school journalism for I taught high school journalism for I taught high school journalism for about 12 years. And most of that was in about 12 years. Um, and I had a great program and I love the kids, but um, just got and I love the kids, but um, just got and I love the kids, but um, just got really burned out. I always say I broke really burned out. I always say I broke really burned out. I always say I broke up with the yearbook. Um, my last couple up with the yearbook. Um, I've been really fortunate because Um, I've been really fortunate because Um, I've been really fortunate because I'm I think I'm on my fourth marketing I'm I think I'm on my fourth marketing I'm I think I'm on my fourth marketing type role out of teaching and they've type role out of teaching and they've type role out of teaching and they've all had something to do with education. all had something to do with education. all had something to do with education. Um, which, you know, has ended up kind Um, which, you know, has ended up kind Um, which, you know, has ended up kind of being a niche for me. And, um, now of being a niche for me. And, um, now of being a niche for me. And, um, now I'm at Learning Lab Witchah. And I'm at Learning Lab Witchah. And I'm at Learning Lab Witchah. And Learning Lab is basically a nonprofit Learning Lab is basically a nonprofit Learning Lab is basically a nonprofit startup that is encouraging the startup that is encouraging the startup that is encouraging the development of new education models, development of new education models, development of new education models, kindergarten through 12th grade. And kindergarten through 12th grade. And kindergarten through 12th grade. And it's definitely been a very fun career it's definitely been a very fun career it's definitely been a very fun career experience. Um, just the whole startup experience. Um, just the whole startup experience. Um, just the whole startup thing has been fun and also feeling thing has been fun and also feeling thing has been fun and also feeling like, you know, we really might be able like, you know, we really might be able like, you know, we really might be able to make a difference in how education to make a difference in how education to make a difference in how education looks. I, I, I, » you know, I always thought about like if » you know, I always thought about like if » you know, I always thought about like if you're an English teacher and Samuel you're an English teacher and Samuel you're an English teacher and Samuel decides not to do his paper, like that's decides not to do his paper, like that's decides not to do his paper, like that's kind of on Samuel and he gets an F. And the other thing I didn't like about it was I other thing I didn't like about it was I other thing I didn't like about it was I was just working all the time, late at was just working all the time, late at was just working all the time, late at night, all summer. And you know, my dad night, all summer. And you know, my dad night, all summer. And you know, my dad was a capitalist and taught me that I was a capitalist and taught me that I was a capitalist and taught me that I should be getting compensated for those should be getting compensated for those should be getting compensated for those hours and it was like probably $3 an hours and it was like probably $3 an hours and it was like probably $3 an hour by the time it was done, you know. hour by the time it was done, you know. hour by the time it was done, you know. So, um I just I the other thing that I So, um I just I the other thing that I So, um I just I the other thing that I personally um didn't love about teaching personally um didn't love about teaching personally um didn't love about teaching is I was going to be the hardest worker is I was going to be the hardest worker is I was going to be the hardest worker in the building. Maybe not the hardest, in the building. Maybe not the hardest, in the building. Maybe not the hardest, but I was going to work really hard and but I was going to work really hard and but I was going to work really hard and do my very best job. And by the time I was in high school, he had by the time I was in high school, he had by the time I was in high school, he had merged it a couple times and um then merged it a couple times and um then merged it a couple times and um then retired. And so he was kind of just an retired. And so he was kind of just an retired. And so he was kind of just an entrepreneurial guy. He liked to own entrepreneurial guy. He liked to own entrepreneurial guy. He liked to own property. Um had a storage facility. He property. Um had a storage facility. He property. Um had a storage facility. He sold life insurance. Um and he loved, sold life insurance. Um and he loved, sold life insurance. Um and he loved, you know, working with young guys like you know, working with young guys like you know, working with young guys like you. Um and that was like kind of a you. Um and that was like kind of a you. Um and that was like kind of a really short sweet time in his life, I really short sweet time in his life, I really short sweet time in his life, I think. And then he um got a brain tumor think. And then he um got a brain tumor think. And then he um got a brain tumor the year that my first my oldest the year that my first my oldest the year that my first my oldest daughter was born, which would have been daughter was born, which would have been daughter was born, which would have been 2007. 2007. 2007. And it just affected slowly over time And it just affected slowly over time And it just affected slowly over time affected his cognitive ability. But affected his cognitive ability. But somewhere in there, he and I decided somewhere in there, he and I decided somewhere in there, he and I decided that we were going to start a vending that we were going to start a vending that we were going to start a vending business. And I wanted I'm interested in business. And I wanted I'm interested in business. And I wanted I'm interested in health and nutrition and I wanted to do health and nutrition and I wanted to do health and nutrition and I wanted to do like healthy snacks. Um, and we quickly like healthy snacks. Um, and we quickly like healthy snacks. Um, and we quickly learned that canons don't really care learned that canons don't really care learned that canons don't really care about » Yeah. What was it called? Remind me. » Yeah. My dad actually ended up not really being able to help ended up not really being able to help ended up not really being able to help me that much, which like I didn't I was me that much, which like I didn't I was me that much, which like I didn't I was an educator, you know, and that's one an educator, you know, and that's one an educator, you know, and that's one thing we learn a lot at Learning Lab is thing we learn a lot at Learning Lab is thing we learn a lot at Learning Lab is that often educators don't have like a that often educators don't have like a that often educators don't have like a business background. Um, but I did business background. Um, but I did business background. Um, but I did really gain a lot from the experience really gain a lot from the experience really gain a lot from the experience cuz I had to basically like sell the cuz I had to basically like sell the cuz I had to basically like sell the machines. I had to get them placed in machines. I had to get them placed in machines. I had to get them placed in hightra areas and I feel like I did a hightra areas and I feel like I did a hightra areas and I feel like I did a pretty good job and um it was fun to do pretty good job and um it was fun to do pretty good job and um it was fun to do that part of it. Um, I don't want to do that part of it. Um, I don't want to do that part of it. Um, I don't want to do anything related to sales really, but anything related to sales really, but anything related to sales really, but it was good for me to, you know, get but it was good for me to, you know, get but it was good for me to, you know, get out of my comfort zone and look at the out of my comfort zone and look at the out of my comfort zone and look at the financials and all that stuff. But it financials and all that stuff. But it financials and all that stuff. But it just ended up like I ended up just ended up like I ended up just ended up like I ended up understanding that this on its own was understanding that this on its own was understanding that this on its own was not going to be an income earner. And I not going to be an income earner. And I not going to be an income earner. And I think I could have, you know, expanded think I could have, you know, expanded think I could have, you know, expanded what I was doing there if I wanted to do what I was doing there if I wanted to do what I was doing there if I wanted to do like a health and wellness business. And like a health and wellness business. And like a health and wellness business. And we had talked about that. But I I think we had talked about that. But I I think we had talked about that. But I I think what I learned about myself is like I what I learned about myself is like I what I learned about myself is like I even though I have this entrepreneurial even though I have this entrepreneurial even though I have this entrepreneurial family and bent that I need to be doing family and bent that I need to be doing family and bent that I need to be doing some kind of service profession to some kind of service profession to some kind of service profession to really feel good at the end of the day. really feel good at the end of the day. really feel good at the end of the day. Yeah. giant in the vending business. Yeah. giant in the vending business. Yeah. Almost. And we would put a healthy Almost. And we would put a healthy Almost. And we would put a healthy machine somewhere and they would come machine somewhere and they would come machine somewhere and they would come and put like 10 really cool junk food and put like 10 really cool junk food and put like 10 really cool junk food machines next to it. I mean so what are machines next to it. I mean so what are machines next to it. I mean so what are you going to choose? I more than once it you going to choose? I more than once it you going to choose? I more than once it would be like they would have had one would be like they would have had one would be like they would have had one regular junk food machine. We put the regular junk food machine. We put the regular junk food machine. We put the healthy machine and then you'd come back healthy machine and then you'd come back healthy machine and then you'd come back and there'd be like five. They'd have and there'd be like five. They'd have and there'd be like five. They'd have like every machine they had in the space like every machine they had in the space like every machine they had in the space and then you know you're not going to and then you know you're not going to and then you know you're not going to get your percentage of the market share get your percentage of the market share get your percentage of the market share there. So there. So there. So » well you did a good job and that was a » well you did a good job and that was a » well you did a good job and that was a tough time. uh your dad came into my tough time. uh your dad came into my tough time. uh your dad came into my life at a very pivotal time uh where I life at a very pivotal time uh where I life at a very pivotal time uh where I needed I needed a mentor slashf father needed I needed a mentor slashf father needed I needed a mentor slashf father figure in this world and he became way figure in this world and he became way figure in this world and he became way more than just a business mentor to me more than just a business mentor to me more than just a business mentor to me and um and um and um » he he just I mean he just loved working » he he just I mean he just loved working » he he just I mean he just loved working with you and your brothers and um with you and your brothers and um with you and your brothers and um » you know it it really does suck that he » you know it it really does suck that he » you know it it really does suck that he he didn't have longer in that space he didn't have longer in that space he didn't have longer in that space because I think he just would have loved because I think he just would have loved because I think he just would have loved to watch I to watch I to watch I this building that we're in where you're this building that we're in where you're this building that we're in where you're doing this book business. I mean, stuff doing this book business. I mean, stuff doing this book business. I mean, stuff like that you guys are doing, he like that you guys are doing, he like that you guys are doing, he would have been just like wowed. So, it would have been just like wowed. So, it would have been just like wowed. I mean, but golly, he fought through it. I mean, but golly, he fought through it. I mean, he just kept going. Even when he knew he he just kept going. Even when he knew he he just kept going. She's the executive Lydia Hampton. She's the executive Lydia Hampton. She's the executive director of Learning Lab Witchah. Um, director of Learning Lab Witchah. Um, director of Learning Lab Witchah. Um, and just to explain kind of how it and just to explain kind of how it and just to explain kind of how it works, um, we were started by a large works, um, we were started by a large works, um, we were started by a large education nonprofit. Um, it's called education nonprofit. Um, it's called education nonprofit. Um, it's called Stand Together. It's a national Stand Together. It's a national Stand Together. It's a national nonprofit and they focus on societal nonprofit and they focus on societal nonprofit and they focus on societal issues and they believe in bottomup issues and they believe in bottomup issues and they believe in bottomup empowerment. So instead of creating a empowerment. So instead of creating a empowerment. So instead of creating a system up here that tells people how to system up here that tells people how to system up here that tells people how to fix the problem, they think the people fix the problem, they think the people fix the problem, they think the people in the work need to be the people fixing in the work need to be the people fixing in the work need to be the people fixing the problem. And so they tend to partner the problem. And so they tend to partner the problem. And so they tend to partner with entrepreneurial nonprofit founders. with entrepreneurial nonprofit founders. with entrepreneurial nonprofit founders. Um but we happen to be part of their Um but we happen to be part of their Um but we happen to be part of their kind of their venture studio. And so we kind of their venture studio. And so we kind of their venture studio. And so we are a portfolio piece of theirs. We've are a portfolio piece of theirs. We've are a portfolio piece of theirs. We've actually spun off now. But um so Lydia, they had tapped Lydia But um so Lydia, they had tapped Lydia But um so Lydia, they had tapped Lydia to lead this effort and they basically to lead this effort and they basically to lead this effort and they basically gave her the concept or the vision and gave her the concept or the vision and gave her the concept or the vision and then they just told her to go. And so she had the resources she needed, but she had the resources she needed, but she had the resources she needed, but she really was tasked with doing this she really was tasked with doing this she really was tasked with doing this whole huge project by herself. I knew her husband pretty well. and she knew her husband pretty well. and she knew her husband pretty well. and she called me and I was working for the called me and I was working for the called me and I was working for the National Association of Secondary School National Association of Secondary School National Association of Secondary School Principles at the time and I was Principles at the time and I was Principles at the time and I was traveling around the country seeing a traveling around the country seeing a traveling around the country seeing a lot of different school situations um lot of different school situations um lot of different school situations um running their social media for several running their social media for several running their social media for several different brands and I loved that job. I mean like I you were going to get me out mean like I you were going to get me out mean like I you were going to get me out of that job kicking and screaming. Um, of that job kicking and screaming. Um, of that job kicking and screaming. Um, but my girls were, you know, entering but my girls were, you know, entering but my girls were, you know, entering high school and I was thinking about the high school and I was thinking about the high school and I was thinking about the time that I was missing cuz I was time that I was missing cuz I was time that I was missing cuz I was traveling. I was traveling probably traveling. I was traveling probably traveling. I was traveling probably close to 30%. close to 30%. close to 30%. Um, and so the first time Lydia offered Um, and so the first time Lydia offered Um, and so the first time Lydia offered me the job, I turned it down. And so she me the job, I turned it down. But I just couldn't get past this idea that first couldn't get past this idea that first couldn't get past this idea that first of all, I love Witchaw. You know, I grew of all, I love Witchaw. You know, I grew of all, I love Witchaw. You know, I grew up in Aldredo. I love the area and um my up in Aldredo. I love the area and um my up in Aldredo. I love the area and um my prior role had been at the United Way prior role had been at the United Way prior role had been at the United Way and I was just like up to my neck in and I was just like up to my neck in and I was just like up to my neck in Witchah stuff and so I love Witchah and Witchah stuff and so I love Witchah and Witchah stuff and so I love Witchah and I thought it was really cool that at I thought it was really cool that at I thought it was really cool that at least the first step of this project was least the first step of this project was least the first step of this project was going to benefit Witchaw. Secondly, I going to benefit Witchaw. Secondly, I going to benefit Witchaw. Secondly, I was seeing the problem that they were was seeing the problem that they were was seeing the problem that they were trying to solve all over the country, trying to solve all over the country, trying to solve all over the country, which is that school can't look the same which is that school can't look the same which is that school can't look the same for every child. It can't be one for every child. It can't be one for every child. It can't be one sizefits-all. And so that was really sizefits-all. And so that was really sizefits-all. And so that was really appealing to me. I felt like they had appealing to me. I felt like they had appealing to me. I felt like they had the right idea and the idea that the right idea and the idea that the right idea and the idea that the project was going to involve all project was going to involve all project was going to involve all different types of school. You know, we different types of school. You know, we different types of school.
